What do you enjoy about the work you do? EVERYTHING! I was part of a TRIO program as an undergrad and my advisors and mentors were key in my success academically and professionally. I believe that TRIO offices are special places for students. I always remind students that we are here to support and serve them in whatever way we can. It is great to know that students trust us and in return, I make sure that my time and space is available to them.

What are your hobbies? I love to travel and I always find a way to explore new places; I do that is by supporting the Portland Timbers. Meeting other Timbers’ supporters through these various trips has been extremely rewarding. Fun fact: I was at the coldest games in MLS history, it was 18 degrees at kickoff! I recently got into playing music again and after I buying an accordion a few months ago, I love it! It has brought me closer together with my friends and family.

My name is Gabe Hernandez and I currently serve as a Student Success Specialist for TRIO SES & STEM. I have a Bachelor of Arts in History with a minor in Philosophy and a master’s degree in College Student Services Administration, both from Oregon State University.

Before coming to KU from Oregon, I worked as an Educational Advisor for a TRIO program at Western Oregon University. During my time there I advised students, served on various on-campus committees and served as the coordinator for the SEP Summer Bridge Program.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, writing, running, and exploring new places. In addition, music is a big part of my life and I enjoy playing the saxophone and accordion.

I am excited to be here at KU, Rock Chalk!
