Irene Olivares, PhD

TRIO SES Student Success Specialist
Primary office:

My name is Irene Olivares, and I am a Student Success Specialist with TRIO Supportive Educational Services. I am originally from Los Altos de Jalisco but grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. I am the oldest of five siblings, and I was the first person in my family to attend college. I received an Associate of Liberal Arts degree from Phoenix College in 2006 and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Arizona State University in 2008.

After graduating from ASU, I had the privilege of working as a reading instructor and interpreter at a Phoenix elementary school. I moved to Lawrence in 2010 to pursue a Ph.D. in European History at KU. I served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and Lecturer in the KU History Department from 2011-2016. I taught classes on early modern Europe and the history of women and gender in Europe.

My studies and research have taken me across the globe. I have traveled to Morocco and Portugal, and I lived in Madrid, Spain for one year. Based on my experiences, I can confidently say that your KU education will take you many places!

I am returning to KU after one year of serving as the First-Generation Student Specialist and a Student Success Lecturer at Washburn University in Topeka, KS. I am excited to be at KU once again and to see the great things that Jayhawks accomplish around campus.
