My name is Paul Trana. I am the Associate Director of TRIO STEM. I grew up in a small town in North Dakota, surviving winters with the lowest recorded temperatures in the U.S. (excluding Alaska) at -60 degrees Fahrenheit. After high school I attended Northland College in Ashland, WI (also a very cold place), where I received a BA in Sociology. Then I attended Central Michigan University and earned an MA in Sociology. Now I am completing an Ed. D in Higher Education Administration here at KU. I have worked with students in the TRIO and GEAR UP programs for 20+ years, since the summer of 1992 when I was a summer staff person with Upward Bound. I thoroughly enjoy working with students and helping them find their own paths to success. I also like looking at data to understand how and why students and post-secondary institutions can be more effective in fulfilling their goals and missions. Outside of work, I have been involved in regional TRIO associations for a number of years, first in the western U.S. (including ND) and now throughout Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska. I am very interested in helping TRIO and other student affairs programs and offices, especially in small or rural communities, to become more successful. At home I enjoy spending time with my wife and kids, ages 11 and 6; cooking, reading, especially to complete my dissertation; and finding time to practice Tai Chi Chuan.
