TRIO Tutoring

We recognize that TRIO Peer Tutoring is crucial to the success of many TRIO students. Through in-person and virtual tutoring, it is our hope that students will continue to build personal relationships with peers who are specifically concerned about their development as learners in this virtual academic community.

One-on-One Peer Tutoring

Course-Specific Peer Tutoring is available for up to two (2) courses per semester and will be held either in-person or virtually, by student request and availability, at the same time and day each week throughout the semester. If your availability does not align with a current Peer Tutor, or we do not have a Peer Tutor in the course area you request, you will be placed on a waiting list. Although there are no guarantees, we will try to make every effort to locate a Peer Tutor to get you matched for the semester.

In-person and online TRIO Tutoring begins by the second week of classes each semester. The Academic Coordinator will meet with students who request a tutor and match students based on student and tutor availability. For students who request to meet virtually, Peer Tutors will email students and provide a custom Zoom URL with a 10-digit meeting ID (https://kansas.zoom.us/j/10-digit). This is the link that should be used to initiate each online tutoring session. TRIO students will receive reminders through Jayhawk GPS approximately 12-hours prior to the tutoring appointment.

FAQ

Peer tutoring begins with your TRIO Student Success Specialist (SSS), who will then schedule a meeting for you with the TRIO Academic Coordinator (AC). The AC is responsible for matching you with a tutor(s).

We have assembled a highly qualified and talented group of your peers to assist you with your classes. Our tutors are not only well-versed in the subject area they tutor, but also are knowledgeable about test preparation, learning difficulties, study habits, and time management.

It is your responsibility to attend all sessions prepared and on time. If you miss sessions your tutoring may be canceled.

  • Both excused and unexcused absences are considered an absence.
  • Sessions are a minimum of 50 minutes on the same day and time each week.
  • Rescheduling sessions are to be kept at a minimum and are contingent on the tutor’s availability

A peer tutor meets with participants weekly. Because of this consistent contact, a peer tutor often becomes an important person in participants’ lives. Therefore, it is mandatory that peer tutors be professional and cognizant of the roles that they play. A successful peer tutor is a helper, a role model, and a TRIO SES & STEM representative.

We cannot guarantee that a tutor will be found for all tutoring requests, especially junior-senior level courses or for students with limited time availability. We encourage TRIO students to meet with faculty/instructors during office hours and utilize campus resources such as course help rooms and supplemental instruction/ group tutoring provided by the University Academic Support Centers.

  1. Tutoring and mentoring establish positive bonds that students can draw from when interacting with fellow students, with university faculty and staff, and with future employers.
  2. Collaborative relationships focus on how a student functions as a student, both socially and academically. Students and their tutors and mentors work together toward specific, measurable goals with a shared commitment.
  3. Peer tutoring outside of our Math Tutoring and Writing Tutoring by Appointment Services are one-on-one relationships. Often other teaching/learning formats are ineffective because group settings include numerous distractions and may not address the individual difference in learning styles.
