Biography —
Julie Hamel graduated from KU with degrees in Spanish and secondary education, which led to her first career as a high school Spanish teacher in Kansas City. Returning to college to earn a Master's of School Counseling, led her to a second career as a high school guidance counselor in Chapman, Kansas. In 2014, Julie earned a Ph.D. in Counseling and Student Development from Kansas State University, which brought her to a third career in higher education, first with the University Career Center, and now with TRIO SES & STEM.
Beyond advising TRIO students, Julie is active in developing opportunities for students to expand intercultural and international awareness. Julie previously led or co-led the Preparing for International Careers Costa Rica program, and in 2020, developed a new class and study abroad program specifically for TRIO SES & STEM students – Developing Global Perspective. Nineteen TRIO students have traveled with Julie to Costa Rica in 2022 and 2023. In 2015 she founded Fostering Jayhawk Success, a campus initiative to bring awareness to and better support KU students that have been in foster care. Julie continues to build connections with community and campus partners to serve these students.
